Obituary for Roland E. Hansen

Roland E. Hansen, 94, of Gettysburg, PA passed away Friday evening, January 26, 2024, at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Gettysburg, with his wife of 63 years, Martha J. (Reed) Hansen by his side. He was a humble and principled man, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Born May 10, 1929, in Northboro, Iowa, he was the son of the late Rev. Dr. Edward Carl and Emma Catherine (Tiemann) Hansen. He grew up in rural Johnson, Nebraska, graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, NE, in 1946, studied at the Lincoln School of Commerce, and received his bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan College. While in college, he helped his father build the new United Lutheran Church in Lincoln, mixing mortar for the building’s stone walls. That structure is now the Hansen Chapel attached to the new United Lutheran Church. He proudly served for 8 years in the Nebraska National Guard.

Following his faith, he became a missionary for the Lutheran Church, leaving for south-east Asia in 1957. Arriving by boat in Singapore, he met the love of his life, fellow missionary, Martha (Marty) Jean Reed, whom he would marry in 1960. He served as the mission’s business manager in Malaysia from 1957-1960. From 1960-1968 he supervised the construction of a new Lutheran church and high school in Hong Kong, as well as serving as the coordinator for incoming missionaries. He returned to Malaysia with Marty and their four children to finish his missionary service as the business manager for the mission from 1968-1972. Returning to the United States, he took a position as business manager for Gettysburg College, which he was dedicated to for 25 years until his retirement. He was honored with the title of “Business Manager Emeritus” by the college upon his retirement. Roland was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, where he served in many roles for 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf, and watching Nebraska Cornhusker football.

In addition to his wife, Roland is survived by his four children, Mark Hansen and his wife Donna, of Landisville, PA, Andrew Hansen and his wife Sherri, of Gettysburg, PA, Joanna Ravaris and her husband John, of Delafield, WI, Jonathan Hansen and his wife Christina, of Gettysburg, PA; his five grandchildren, Hannah Ravaris, Elsa Ravaris, Liam Hansen, Jacob Hansen, Katherine Hansen; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hansen of Lincoln, NE, a brother-in-law, Robert Reed of Harrisburg, PA; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, the Rev. Paul G. Hansen, Gertrude M. Rathe, and an infant brother Eugene Hansen.

His family would like to thank the staff at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village for the outstanding care that they gave Roland in the past year, as well as the nursing staff at the Gettysburg Hospital for the compassion and care that they gave him and his family in his final days. A private interment will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. A memorial service for Roland will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Steven Herr officiating. A luncheon will follow immediately at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Hansen Fund for Global Mission Support, c/o Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
