Obituary for Romona K. White
Romona K. White, 80, of Asbury Park, NJ, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at JSUMC in Neptune.
Born February 23, 1936 in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Raymond W. and Jennie Sowers Dayhoff. She grew up in Gettysburg and summered on the Jersey Shore during her teen years, working in Foley’s Diner in Asbury Park. She moved to Neptune upon marrying Lawrence W. White, a N.J. native, to whom she was married for 20 years and with whom she had three sons.
Surviving are her son Robert L. White of Interlaken, N.J., and his husband Andrew DePrisco, son Ray L. White of Bowie, Md., as well as her favorite sister Freda Hulton of Gettysburg, Pa., with whom she lived for many years, and Dorothy Jacobs of Abbotstown, Pa., and many well-loved nieces, nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Mona necessarily was the life of the party and always the center of everyone’s attention. She’d have it no other way. She loved her sons and her many sisters and brothers and all her family, to whom she was extremely loyal and proud. She, however, loved no one as much as she loved her Jack Russell Tuffy, who was “the most beautiful dog in the world.” Like Tuffy, she was “a creature of habit” and always knew the best way of doing everything. While her final years were compromised by her aggravating loss of memory, Mona never lost her sense of humor or her true appreciation for her family. She loved to laugh, even when she was the brunt of the joke. At the tender age of 70, after one too many whiskey sours, she danced on a table at her sister’s birthday party and leaped to the floor, fracturing her ankle. (It was a funny story she loved to retell!)
She worked at Your Family Drug in Belmar for many years, and was a close friend of Joan Pear and her family. She was a past president of Hamilton Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church. Her favorite hobby was quitting smoking (Marlboro Light Softpack), and she never tired of smoking “her last pack.” To celebrate their 60th birthdays, Mona and her lifelong best friend Sarah Burst went on “the trip of a lifetime” to Paris and London with her son Robert. She was a resident of the Asbury Tower and had many lovely friends in the building.
