Obituary for Ruth Ann Akers

Ruth Ann Akers (nee Taylor), age 84, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024. Ruth was born on August 14, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio to the late Clarence and Nellie Irene Taylor.

Following her HS graduation, Ruth met and married Benny M. Akers, who soon enlisted in the US Army. Together they began their lives as a military family. Benny was the love of her life, her best friend and loving companion for 64 joyful years. Their years together were filled with faith, family, and happiness. Their marriage was one of respect and support for each other, and most of all, love. They were blessed with four daughters and years later, welcomed their sons-in-law with open arms.

In the early years, Ruth was a fulltime mother and homemaker. She was a meticulous housekeeper and a wonderful cook who could often be found in the kitchen. A talented seamstress, Ruth sewed many clothing items for the girls when they were young. She enjoyed being outdoors and loved creating beautiful flower gardens. But most importantly, Ruth placed her focus on her family. From teaching them endless life skills, to being their biggest fan, she was always there for them. She believed they were her greatest gifts.

Once the girls were of school age, Ruth re-entered the work force, starting as a waitress in 1972 at Howard Johnsons in Gettysburg. Benny’s frequent military relocations required Ruth to change positions often, and Ruth’s natural organizational and leadership talents helped her to pursue many diverse careers. In 1975 when the family moved to Fort Meade, Maryland, Ruth worked as the shipping manager at the Military Post Exchange. Shortly after returning to Pennsylvania, Ruth started a career at TAB Books in Blue Ridge Summit, where she managed the operations of the Book of the Month Club. She worked at TAB Books until 1996 when they closed their doors. At that time, Ruth transitioned from her long tenured volunteer service, taking a full-time position working for the Girl Scouts, an organization that was dear to her heart. She spent the last few years of her working career as the secretary for the Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.

Ruth was a lifelong volunteer. She had a kind heart and an outgoing spirit. She was a Girl Scout Leader and mentor most of her adult life, holding various roles in the organization. As a member, she also gave her time helping at St. John Lutheran, the church that she loved. She worked on the hospitality committee, the altar guild, the fundraising events, and helped in the rectory office when needed. She never let an opportunity to help others pass her by.

Ruth was preceded in death by her older brothers, Robert and Donald Taylor, her youngest daughter Peggy Hartman, and her beloved husband, Benny M. Akers.

Ruth is survived by older sister, Marilyn Thomas, younger brother Russell Taylor, her three daughters, and sons-in-law: Frances and husband Thomas, Garnetta and husband Martin, Christina Bucher, and son-in-law Russell Hartman. Ruth was the loving “Grandma” to 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive her.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Fairfield, PA with Pastor Scott Zimmerer presiding. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM prior to the service at 11:00 AM. The committal service will be held at Fairfield Union Cemetery, immediately after the service, with a lunch to follow for family and friends at St. John Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 13 East Main Street, Fairfield, PA 17320. Online condolences may be made at Monahanfuneralhome.com
