Samuel L. Brewer of Carroll Valley, PA passed away at his home on April 7th, 2018. Born on May 17th, 1932 in Blue Ridge Summit, MD, he was the son of the late Samuel D. Brewer and Vincentia (Adams) Brewer. He attended both Emmitsburg and Gettysburg schools and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. He was stationed in Darmstadt Germany where he met the love of his life, Katharina C. (Hirsch) Brewer. They were happily married for64 years.

Together they raised 6 children and he is survived by all - Christina Pike and husband, Ron; Vincentia “Vinnie” Dorse and husband, Terry; Linda Herrick and husband, Dan; Timothy Brewer and wife, Stephanie; Teresa McGee and husband, Marc and Rebecca Eckert and husband, Thad. They have 11 grandchildren – Stephen, Christopher & Kevin Pike; Sydney Morehead, Liz (Ridinger) and Matt Herrick; Eric and Vincent Brewer; Megan (Yinger) and Sarah (Babcock) McGee and Maddie Eckert. Sam has 11 great-grandchildren. He is survived by siblings Katharine “Sis” Ambrose, Vincent “Gene” Brewer, Darlene McCleaf and Robert Brewer. He was predeceased by brothers, Clyde and Charles.

As Sam loved farming he worked for 10 years on the Harry Scott farm in Gettysburg, PA until a farming accident caused him to end his farming career. He took a janitor’s job in 1966 at United Telephone of PA and later became a test board operator, which he did for 27 years. He was also the Tax Collector for Freedom Township for 26 years and served 8 years there as a township, road supervisor. He was a lector at St. Joseph’s parish in Emmitsburg for many years as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and Katharina owned and serviced vending machines as retirees.

Together they traveled to Katharina’s homeland many time over the years and took several trips cross country to visit family and friends. He also stayed in touch with several of his military friends and visited them in Iowa and New York, as well as attending various Air Force reunions.

Sam loved taking care of his garden, spending time with friends and family and hearing or telling a good joke. He enjoyed making friends wherever he went. In his later years, he would pass the time reading and doing jigsaw puzzles with his wife and family. Many happy hours were spent sitting around the table, laughing and telling stories while the pieces went into place. He will be missed very much by all who knew and loved him.
