Wanda “Sue” Leisey Kerr
Sue Kerr of Lake Heritage, Gettysburg, wife of Frederick Kerr for 56 years, passed away at home Thursday, April 19, 2018 surrounded by family. She was born March 31, 1939 in LaGrange, Indiana to Charles and Dorothy Detweiler Leisey.
In addition to her husband, Fred, Sue is survived by sons Keith Kerr and wife Deb, of Alexandria, Va., Phillip Kerr and wife Mei, of Tracy, CA., Steven Kerr and wife Cindi of Chesterfield, VA., and a daughter Melissa Moyer and husband Gary of Dover, DE. Grandchildren Amy Kerr, Alex Kerr, Adam Kerr, Erin Kerr, Rachel Moyer and Clara Kerr, a sister, Louise Poier of Snohomish, WA., and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family in mainly in Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida.
Sue received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN and a master of science as a reading specialist from Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, PA. She retired from teaching as a Remedial Reading Specialist from the Scotland School for Veterans Children, Scotland, PA. Sue taught clarinet students at home.
Sue was a 30-year Gettysburg resident and had raised her children in Spring Grove and Greencastle, PA, as well as Kokomo, IN. In Gettysburg, Sue was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing with numerous groups. She was also a voracious reader.
Her lifelong passion has been music, particularly playing the clarinet. Most recently, Sue was the principal clarinetist with the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra (PA), Frederick Symphony Orchestra (MD), and the Hanover Symphony Orchestra (PA). Earlier, she was the principal clarinetist in the Maryland Symphony Orchestra (Hagerstown, MD) in its founding years. She was a member of numerous other musical groups all of which enabled her to pursue her musical dreams.
She and her husband traveled together all over the world in the past 30 years and enjoyed meeting the people in other parts of the world.
Sue was a loving, caring mother, wife, sister, and grandmother devoted to her family.
A memorial service will be conducted 2:30 PM at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA 17325, Saturday, April 28, 2018. Family will receive friends from 1 PM to 2:30 PM with a memorial service to follow. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, following the memorial service.
