Obituary for Betty Shultz
Betty Shultz , 94, of Cashtown, PA died Wednesday evening, February 1, 2017 at her home.
Born January 22, 1923 in Cashtown, Pa she was the oldest of 8 children. As a child she moved from Cashtown to Stanton, Va, then to Lemoyne, Pa and back to Cashtown where she lived until her death. She married Dorsey A. Shultz at age 21 and resided in Dorsey's homestead less than a mile from her childhood home in Cashtown. Betty worked at the Gettysburg Silk Mill for a year, then went to Mussleman's Biglerville plant for over 10 years. She transferred from Mussleman to Knouse Food's Orrtanna plant where she worked until retirement at age 74. As a Girl Scout leader for many years, she touched many lives with examples of selfless service to others. Many hours were devoted to crocheting and she won several ribbons for work exhibited at the South Mountain Fair. She crocheted over 40 afgahns that were given to each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. She was always ready to travel and visited a majority of the states including Alaska. Foreign travels included Nova Scotia, Canada, Mexico, Egypt, and Israel. She spent many summers with Dorsey at their cabin in Potter County, Pa. When Dorsey died at the cabin in 1992, she continued to spend most of the summer months herself at the cabin until she was 91. For the last few years her time at the cabin was accompanied by family and was shortened to a few weeks each summer. She left a legacy of love and commitment for her family and a lifetime example of hard work, integrity, community service and personal accomplishments.
She is survived by her 3 children, Mickey Ann Balog, Ronald Shultz, and April Shultz; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Nancy Luckenbaugh and Alverta Goetz, and a sister-in-law Kathryn Landis.
A viewing will be held at Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, Pa on Sunday, February 5, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Flohr's Church Cemetery on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
