Obituary for Carolyn Strohm Durboraw
Carolyn Strohm Durboraw of Gettysburg entered into eternal rest at The Cross Keys Village of The Brethren Home on March 30th, at the age of 80. Fondly known as “Mimi” by her three grandsons, they were her pride and joy.
A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at The Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the church and following the service at a reception in the church social hall. A private burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Carolyn was born at home in Dauphin “Stoneycreek”, PA on February 14, 1937 to the late Melvin Strohm and Bertha (McElwee) Strohm. She was a 1955 graduate of William Penn High School in Harrisburg, PA and 1958 graduate of Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing. While working as a registered nurse at Polyclinic Hospital, she met her future husband Melvin Russell Durboraw. They were married on 9/22/62 at Stone Glen Church in Dauphin, PA. Carolyn also worked at Gettysburg Hospital as an RN. Upon the birth of their children, she left the field of nursing to raise her children and assist Melvin on their dairy farm. She was an active member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, where she served as an ordained elder and deacon, and attended various Bible study groups. Past involvements also include Mt. Joy Homemakers, Leader in the Barlow-Mt. Joy 4-H Club, Adams County Cooperative Extension Board and patient driver for the “Road to Recovery” program of The American Cancer Society.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Melvin on 8/22/91, as well as two brothers, Melvin and Richard Strohm, and a sister, Jean (Strohm) Stout.
Carolyn is survived by her two children, Kathy Sterrett and her husband, Mark, of Hanover, a son, Todd Durboraw and his wife, Tina, of Gettysburg, three grandchildren, Evan Sterrett of West Hollywood, CA, Jacob Durboraw of Gettysburg, and Cole Sterrett, of Hanover and step-grandchildren Miranda and Rhett Staub. Also surviving are a sister, Barbara Campbell of Dauphin, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was grateful for the six years she was given after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and credits Johns Hopkins and her surgeon, Dr. Martin Makary, for this miracle. In lieu of flowers memorials donations may be made to The Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA 17325 or to Johns Hopkins University, Ralph H. Hruban, M.D., Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, 600 N. Wolfe Street, Carnegie 417, Baltimore, MD 21287 (for pancreatic cancer research).
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of SpiriTrust Lutheran Services and The Brethren Home who cared for Carolyn during her illness. They also are thankful for her many friends and relatives who provided their love and support during this time.
