Obituary for Phyllis Jean McCleaf
Phyllis Jean Hawk McCleaf, 83, Cashtown, PA died at the York Hospital on Monday, December 25, 2017.
She was born May 28, 1934 in Adams County, PA the daughter of the late Charles and Jessie Brooks Hawk, Sr.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 59 years, Grover H. McCleaf, two sons, Steven M. McCleaf of Cashtown, PA, Eric M. McCleaf and his wife Kim of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Sharon K. Martin and her husband Terry of San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, Clarissa, Leighton, Declan, and Kellen; a great granddaughter, Elliott Rose; a brother, Charles Hawk, Jr. of Gettysburg, PA; and a sister, Jackie Worley of Littleton, CO.
Phyllis graduated from Littlestown High School and attended Thompson’s Business College in York, PA. She was a member of the Hanover Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. For a time Phyllis was employed as a secretary at R. H. Sheppard, Co. in Hanover and later Thrift Plan Financial Corp. in Gettysburg. She retired from the US Postal Service as Postmaster of the Orrtanna, PA office. She served for 31 years in the Cashtown, PA, McKnightstown, PA and Orrtanna, PA offices. Phyllis was an active member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Cashtown where she served as Sunday School Teacher for 30 years. She also was a member of the church choir and helped every year sewing sleeping bags for the homeless. Phyllis was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cashtown Fire Co., where she held various offices, most recently as Treasurer. She was one of the Judges of Elections for Franklin Township for 6 years.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at Trinity UCC in Cashtown, PA at 11:00 AM with Rev. Christina Fidanza officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 1126 Old Route 30, P.O. Box 194, Cashtown, PA 17310.
