Obituary for Anna "Ann" Louise Deckert

Anna “Ann” Louise (Davis) Deckert, 80 of Gettysburg passed away on July 20, 2024 at the Gettysburg Hospital after a long illness.

Born on October 26, 1943 in Gettysburg, she was the second child of Betty Kroushour Leonard and Lester Davis. She was the wife of James H. Deckert of Gettysburg and mother of two sons, Bradley Deckert and Chad Deckert.

Ann devoted her life to her family and her community. She was heavily involved in Special Olympics and was a coach for multiple sports, including track and swimming, which was her son Bradley’s favorite. She was a Boy Scouts den mother for Arendtsville Cub Scout troop #70 and later became a council member in the Black Walnut District.

Ann loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. She was a youth choir director and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arendtsville. She sang in the adult choir and participated in many Christmas cantatas. She also frequently sang at Saint John’s United Church of Christ in McKnightstown with her grandchildren.

Ann had a long and lucrative career in cosmetology. She operated her own beauty salon out of her home for nearly 60 years. While running her shop and raising her sons, she obtained her teaching certification and went on to become an instructor and later a director for Empire Beauty School. A highlight of her career was leading a team of award winning cosmetology students to compete in an international cosmetology competition in Holland. In addition to operating the home beauty salon, Ann worked at Monahan Funeral Home as a mortuary cosmetologist, doing hair on the deceased to prepare them for viewings. Ann’s career brought her both great professional fulfillment and personal satisfaction.

Ann will be remembered for her infectious laugh, her adoration for her children and grandchildren, and her delicious meatloaf.

In addition to her husband, Ann is survived by her brother Braden Leonard; her son and daughter-in-law Chad and April Deckert; her granddaughter Stephanie Marshall and husband Jackson (their children Arlo and Eva); her granddaughter Lauren Binz and husband Austin (their children Noah, William, and Chad); her granddaughter Olivia Deckert; her grandson Chase Deckert and wife Anna; her grandson Brady Deckert; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her son Bradley Deckert and her siblings Catherine Kimple, Lester Davis Jr., and Bryon Leonard.

Funeral services for Ann will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arendtsville on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held at Monahan Funeral Home on Friday, August 2, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
