Obituary for Barbara A. Hoffman
Barbara A. Hoffman passed away Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Gettysburg Hospital. She was born in Gettysburg on September 16, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Eva (Thomas) Shealer. She was preceded in death by Dale C. Hoffman, father of her children, Billie Mae Brawner, her sister, and Joyce Hoffman Smith, her sister-in-law. She is survived by three sons, Jason Hoffman, and his children, Joshua Hoffman and Laila Statler and her husband Mike, son, Timothy and his wife, Peggy Stewart, and their children Kyle and Tyler, and son, Adam and his wife, Dawn Heiges, and their children, Samantha, Kurtis and Mitchell. She is also survived by nephew, Jeffrey Brawner and his wife, Brenda Livingston and their children; Crystal Scearce and her husband, Benjamin, and their children, Taylor, Brooke and Faith; Lindsay Dern and her husband, Brian, and their sons, Mason and Ean; nephew, Martin Smith, Sr. and his wife Roberta Smith and their children; nephew, Matthew Smith and his wife Kimberly Smith, and long time companion of 28 years Bill Singley.
She was a graduate of Gettysburg High School where she was head majorette her senior year with the high school band – Class of 1951. She was employed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue in Harrisburg. She worked at the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg. She also worked as a sewing teacher for the Sewing Machine Company after going to Pittsburgh for instruction in teaching purchasers of sewing machines. She taught Sunday school at the United Methodist Church for several years in the kindergarten department. She was den mother with the Cub Scouts at Christ Lutheran Church. She worked as a teacher’s aide at James Gettys Elementary School for three years. She then returned to the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg. After three years, she transferred to the Federal Communications Commission and worked in the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau until she retired in 1988. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church on Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Friday, September 21, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg with Rev. Stephen Herr officiating. Interment will be in the mausoleum at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Thursday evening, September 20, 2018 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA.
